At 7 p.m. on Aug. 14 in Yager Stadium, Washburn University hosted the 2015 edition of Traditions Night.

This annual Welcome Week event allowed incoming freshman and other new students to foster and increase their Washburn spirit.

Upon entering the stadium, students were greeted by members of the Leadership Institute, Student Orientation Counselors and cheerleaders.

New students witnessed performances by the cheer squad, Dancing Blues team and the University Marching Blues.

The marching band and cheerleaders led students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members in Washburn cheers, Alma Mater and fight song.

During the event, Washburn athletic teams, including volleyball, soccer and football, along with their coaches stormed the field to be recognized.

Washburn football team’s head coach, Craig Schurig, spoke about the team’s upcoming games in hopes of spiking attendance. The team’s first home game will be at 6 p.m. on Sept. 10.

All who attended the event received a free t-shirt, which were distributed by the Student Orientation Counselors.

Immediately following Traditions Night, Washburn displayed “Pitch Perfect 2” on the field’s jumbotron. Everyone settled onto the field with their friends and blankets to enjoy the film.

The film centered on an all-female, competitive a cappella group called the Barden Bellas. The sequel starred Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Brittany Snow.
