Soccer takes loss in season opener to Minot State

Washburn’s women’s soccer was unable to defeat Minot State in the season opener on Thursday, Sept. 3.

The Ichabods’ started the game off strong with a shot on goal by senior Sara Specht, but they were unable to score. Goalkeeper, Kaitlin Minnich, then partially deflected a mid-box kick giving a 1-0 lead to MSU.

The Beavers’ were able to score another point just before the second half, leaving Washburn with a 2-0 break.

Midfielder, Cadence Bourne was able to steal a point in the 74th minute, with an assist from Specht.

Washburn fell short in the last minutes of the rally, unable to get through MSU’s defense.

The Ichabods’ would lead the match with 11 total saves for the night. Bourne made her second career goal, as Specht had two shots on the goal and a fourth career assist.

First year head coach Chris Jones commented on the Ichabods’ performance in an email interview.

“When we did settle into our game, we knocked the ball around well and put them under pressure a lot more defensively.”

Washburn will be back in action as they see the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs at Yager Stadium with kickoff set for 1 p.m., Sept. 6.
