Sports Speak: Into the Winter

Dylan McManis

Homecoming is over, Halloween is over, fall sports are almost over, and winter is fast approaching. It’s not quiet cold out yet, but already we need to move indoors for our upcoming sports.

MIAA postseason tournaments start up this week, as Washburn soccer takes on Central Missouri. Football still has two games left before the postseason and Volleyball has four matches left, but we will have to wait and see what happens to their postseason. But the big news of the week is that basketball is ready to get started.

Washburn Men’s Basketball opens with exhibition games against University of Kansas Nov. 1, Kansas State University Nov. 4 and Oklahoma University Nov. 8. All of this takes place within the next week before we even get started on the actual season, these games should provide a good practice experience for the team before the Southwestern Oklahoma State Basketball Classic Nov. 11-12 launches them into their competitive season.

Washburn Women’s Basketball also has exhibition games against Kansas State Nov. 4 and University of Kansas Nov. 6 before they start their season in a game against Minot State Nov. 11.

Both of the basketball teams have JV teams this year, so keep your eyes out for those games, although they will not be my primary topic in this column.

Every week you can be sure that we here at the Washburn Review will have articles for you to read about the MIAA Postseason and the winter sports season, including our weekly Sports Speak. Let’s get ready for Basketball Ichabods!
