Students at Washburn University make many fun and meaningful memories during their time on campus. From attending games and studying abroad to making new friends and learning from supportive professors, every student has a story to tell.
Lilly Kobach, senior mass media major, said she enjoys going to football games and participating in events related to her major.
Kobach also liked the Day of Giving, where students from mass media worked together to raise money which makes it fun to meet people with the same major.
Kobach has been at Washburn for three years and feels connected to the campus community.
“I’ve loved my time here. … By the time you’re a senior, you recognize a lot of people. You know most of the students in your major,” Kobach said.
Ronald Holz, senior English and Spanish major, shared that one of his best experiences was studying abroad in Spain in 2022.
“That [studying abroad] was really great. I was in Cadiz, the city that has a ton of history. That’s where Columbus sailed from. And, like, Tupac Amaru, who, like, you know, Tupac is named after, but he’s a Peruvian. He was a Peruvian revolutionary in late the late 18th, maybe early 19th century. Getting to see the place where he was held for something like 40 years,” Holz said.
Holz also talked about how much he grew as a student with the help of his advisor and professors.
“I had a lot of difficulty explaining myself to my advisor, and what I was looking for in classes, what I was learning about, and connecting what I’d learned before. So I think, it’s like, I’m focusing on my advisor, also I’ve taken a lot of classes with her, and then really, the whole English department, for the most part. I found it has been really useful and or helpful in helping me,” Holz said.
Martha Chona Bernal, junior sport management and kinesiology major, transferred to Washburn a year ago, but she already has some favorite memories.
“I’ve had limited time at Washburn since I transferred here, just like a year ago. So, but last semester, over the summer, I got to travel to England with my class just to experience how England is with sports and how different it is here in the United States, so I really like that. And then just going to sporting events around campus is really fun,” Bernal said. “Some older students helped me choose the right classes and gave me advice on which ones to avoid.”
Brenden Sutton, a junior history major, said Washburn feels like a friendly and supportive place. For Sutton, Washburn feels like a home. He also enjoys the events at the beginning of each school year.
“I love going to the beginning of the year activities. Scorch the porch is really fun.I really enjoyed it. I’ve actually been here since 2019 but I was undecided for a while, and then when I finally got nailed down into a major that I was comfortable with, I started making progress. So I can say that throughout all of my time here, the staff members that I’ve worked with have been really amazing, they take time to get to know you, and they definitely enjoy working with the students on a one to one level,” Sutton said.
From exploring new places to forming strong connections, Washburn students are creating lasting memories that shape their college journey.
