The Memorial Union was full of energy as students moved from table to table, talking to people and picking up flyers at Washburn University’s Top Hat event, an event allowing student organizations to share their purpose and increase involvement.
Craig Carter, education professor, talked with students at his table.
“We are here to get students interested in becoming teachers,” Carter said. “We do this event every semester to show what we offer. Today, we have a fun activity—students can tell us about their favorite sticker a teacher gave them when they were kids.”
Another organization at the event was We Are F1rst, represented by Alexandra Venegas, president of Tau Zeta sorority.
“Our group helps students whose parents did not complete a four-year college degree,” Venegas said. “I’m the vice president, and we organize events to support first-generation students. You can follow us on Instagram to stay updated and join any of our events!”
Tony Caldwell, coordinator of the medical lab sciences lecturer from the Allied Health department, talked about different career programs.
“We offer training in occupational therapy assistant, physical therapy assistant, radiology and medical laboratory science,” Caldwell said. “These programs take about two years, and students can get a good-paying job after completing them.”
Top Hat helped student groups and school departments connect with the Washburn community. The event brought students together and helped them learn about different academic and extracurricular options.
