Washburn men’s baseball took on Truman State University Feb. 16 at Falley Field.
It came down to the wire as Truman scored three in the seventh-inning to bring the score 5-4 then scored one run in the ninth to put the score 6-4.
Truman started 2-1 in the first-inning then in the second inning Washburn tied it up to make it 2-2. Washburn scored four runs on five hits and left six on base, while TSU finished with 11 hits and six runs and left nine runners stranded.
Washburn came back with a vengance in their doubleheader with Truman State University Feb. 17. After a sour start in their game the day before, Washburn came out and got the double win.
Game one was a tight competition as Truman State scored four in the second-inning then one run in the fourth-inning to put up five runs. Washburn put up one run in the third-inning and four in the fourth-inning to tie up the game at 5-5.
Both teams were scoreless in the fifth and sixth-inning, then in the bottom of the seventh-inning senior Darian Abram to hit a double to left center and a sacrifice bunt from senior Bowe Behymer allowed Abram to advance to third.
Junior Javis Larson then registered the game-winning RBI as he brought Abram across with a single to shallow center.
The game winning walk-off hit gave the Ichabods momentum in the second game as Washburn destroyed Truman State 10-0.
The first two innings were scoreless by both team, then Washburn exploded in the third-inning with five runs. Washburn notched its first shutout victory at Falley Field since March 11, 2016.
Washburn scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh to make the score 10-0. This game was an outstanding game as they faced 21 batters and struck out eight of them and he only surrendered just three hits in six innings.
Washburn played Truman State for the fourth time Feb. 18 and while this was a very close game, Washburn fell 2-0, falling to a 5-5 record on the year.
The only two runs came in the sixth inning by TSU and while Washburn had many chances to put runs on the board but just could not do it as Truman State’s defense pulled through.
The next time the Ichabods are in action is Feb. 23 at the University of Central Oklahoma. Washburn will look to start off the season with a high note with a win against the Bronchos.
