You don’t have to be “stuck” in Topeka this spring break

Topeka has plenty of exciting spring break activities for everyone, whether you don’t have much money to spend, you have to work, or even if you’re staying on campus.

For starters, here are 50 miles of nature trails in Shawnee County alone that can be found on Shawnee County Parks and Rec’s Official Website. If you aren’t outdoorsy or the weather decides to do something crazy, there are lots of indoor places to check out as well.

Slide by Orange Leaf on Wanamaker for some frozen yogurt, or have all-you-can-eat sushi at the new Mizu Sushi restaurant. Lierin Woods, a Washburn student, suggests ghost tours around Topeka.

“You get to learn a lot about the history of Topeka,” Woods said.

Dennis Etzel Jr., English lecturer at Washburn, has always lived in Topeka and gladly offered a wide range of suggestions.

“If you want to see something really fascinating, go check out Brown V Board.” Etzel said.

He also suggested the usual hangout places for Washburn Students such as PT’s and The Burger Stand. He highly encourages students to go out and see some art. NOTO and downtown offer some interesting places and events as well as our Mulvane Art Museum. Uncle Bo’s Blues Bar is located in the downtown Ramada and will feature various bands playing live music on Fridays and Saturdays.

Dennis gave some great ideas for students on campus as well. He mentioned that many students don’t know about KanopI through Mabee Library. You can sign up with your student information and get free movies. One of his favorites is Donnie Darko. He reminds students that they can always take the bus to Barnes and Noble or the public library.

“There’s an underground coolness to Topeka” said Etzel.

If you’re still struggling to find something to do this spring break, catch up on some hobbies that you’ve put on the back burner so you could focus on school. There’s always something just waiting to be created.
