Washburn falls to Nebraska-Kearney in Saturday showdown

Senior Derrick McClendon chases down quarterback TJ Davis. McClendon ended the day with five total tackles and one assist.

The Washburn Ichabods moved to 2-1 on the season as they dropped a windy Saturday showdown against the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney, 21-13. Despite forcing two turnovers, the Ichabod’s offense stalled in the fourth quarter.

“Offensively, we just couldn’t keep the pressure on them,” Washburn head coach Craig Schurig said. “That’s unusual for us, so it was frustrating not putting back to back first downs together.”

The Ichabods intercepted Nebraska-Kearney quarterback TJ Davis just over a minute into the game. Davis bounced back from initial drive woes and put up three total first half touchdowns for the Lopers: two passing, one rushing. Davis finished the game with 132 passing yards and 74 rushing yards.

The Ichabods made the game interesting after sophomore safety Jordan Finessy knocked the ball free at the goal line, resulting in a turnover for the Lopers. The Ichabods were unable to capitalize on the momentum of effort made by Finnesy.

“I felt like it was a big momentum swing… We missed some tackles throughout the fourth quarter,” Finnesy said. “Just have to clean a few things up and get ready for Missouri Western [State].”

The Ichabods hit the road to face Missouri Western State Saturday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. The Ichabods will return home Oct. 1 against the Emporia State Hornets for the Hall of Fame game at 1 p.m. at Yager Stadium.
