Washburn’s English Department formally recommended the establishment of a journalism major at a meeting (date excluded). Dr. Parry Stroud, instructor in news reporting, and Charles Pearson, Sunday editor of the Topeka Capital-Journal and instructor in news editing, proposed instigation of the more extended journalism program, including on-the-job-training, because of the vast opportunity Topeka affords.

In cooperation with the city newspapers, Washburn students can explore actual newspaper practice as well as the many levels of government in operation here.

Pearson suggested that the extensive governmental agencies available for study would give the Washburn program a unique advantage over most schools.

Many other levels of acceptance are necessary for the major to become part of the established curriculum.
