Washburn University’s largest single gift ever from a corporate foundation was announced today by the Washburn Endowment Association and Washburn University. A $2 million gift from the Capitol Federal Foundation will be designated to the Stoffer Science Building and the Strength and Conditioning Facility renovations.

“Capitol Federal has a long history helping our community and Washburn University,” said Jerry Farley, Washburn University president. “Our partnership punctuates the growth and achievement of both Capitol Federal and Washburn and we are delighted about the investment Capitol Federal makes in the continuing success of the University.”

The Living Learning Center was a major turning point for bringing students back to campus by offering on-campus housing for incoming freshmen. Capitol Federal was among the first and largest contributors to that project, creating the Capitol Federal Learning Center.

“Washburn has a tremendous impact on Topeka and the region,” said Jack Hamilton, Capitol Federal Foundation president. “It is in part for this reason that we are proud to support these projects. With the improved facilities at Stoffer, Washburn’s top-notch science graduates will benefit the Greater Topeka area as they fill existing jobs and help attract companies to Northeast Kansas.

“The Strength and Conditioning Facility will help student-athletes better utilize their time, thus allowing them to become better students and healthier athletes. Our support of the athletic center will produce Washburn student-athlete graduates who will serve as strong candidates for Topeka businesses and industries. Through both facilities, Washburn will continue to strengthen the future of its students, the school and the Greater Topeka community.”

Washburn is committed to renovating the Stoffer Science Building in conjunction with keeping its current student to teacher ratio of 18:1. The combination of one-on-one student/professor interaction and state-of-the-art facilities will attract the best and brightest students, not only in Kansas, but in the nation.

Washburn is just as committed to its renovations of the Strength and Conditioning Facility for athletics. While this facility will benefit our student athletes, it will also create a superior learning environment for students studying physical education and other health courses.

This gift from Capitol Federal will enhance both of these facilities and help to make them a reality for Washburn and the community.
