The Ichabod baseball team had their season opener against Baker University on Feb. 19 cancelled in advance because of a chance of bad weather. A make-up game has yet to be scheduled.

The new season and home opener for the Ichabods is Feb. 26 against Wayne State College (Neb.). Jake Lenherr is scheduled to take the mound for the opener. The following day the team travels to Kansas City, Mo. to take on Rockhurst University before setting up camp at Falley Field March 1-4 for six games in four days against the University of Mary (N.D.)

Originally, according to Steve Anson, head coach, the scheduled opponent was the University of North Dakota, but they cancelled the trip and left Anson scrambling around for replacement games.

“It’s not ideal, you don’t like to play a team that many times in a row, but it’s better than not playing,” said Anson.

The University of Mary was already scheduled to play the Ichabods on March 1-2, so they added two more days and four more games to the schedule. This affords the team with a special opportunity to set up a concrete pitching rotation.

“We feel like we have seven guys fighting for six spots as starters. So it will be a great opportunity for them to all get on the mound early,” said Anson. “Sometimes that doesn’t happen with your schedule. You have such big gaps [between games].”

With its advantages also comes the downfalls of playing the same team so much.

“Sometimes it can get a little old. You want to see some new faces out there,” said Anson.

Regardless of the possible tediousness of the situation, the team is eager to play since the season opener was cancelled.

“This time of the year you’re just looking to play games,” said Anson.
