Washburn Combine coming to SRWC

Measuring up to the pros doesn’t have to be standing next to a cardboard cutout anymore.

The Student Recreation and Wellness Center is set to reveal its latest program – The Washburn Combine.

“Basically, it’s a smaller mirror image of the NFL combine,” said Becky Wilber, SRWC assistant director.

The Washburn Combine will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, April 26. Participants need no prior registration and can show up at the SRWC anytime between the specified hours to participate.

The combine will begin in the SRWC for a 12-minute aptitude test.

“The aptitude test is the one that the actual NFL athletes take,” said Wilber.

Following the aptitude test will be the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, 20-yard shuttle (possibly a 60-yard shuttle) and the 3-cone drill.

“That’s why I came up with this program is because of WU’s Most Fit,” said Wilber. “We had some people who came in and said ‘I know I won’t be able to do the bench press; I can run but my strength is not great.'”

The combine tests emphasize agility and running over strength.

“It’s basically running and jumping with the exception of the aptitude test. It’s just little short bursts of energy,” said Wilber.

Participants can do a test as many times as they want as long as there is no congestion caused from it.

There will be men’s and women’s divisions that will be divided up into different age groups. The overall winner in each age group will receive a prize, and the winners of each individual test will receive a prize as well.

“It’s going to be a fun program,” said Wilber. “It’s not like you have to come out and set the world on fire.”

If fun competition is not enough, the Washburn Combine will also provide an opportunity to try to score better on an aptitude test than Elvis Grbac.
