Newest fraternity working toward promnence

In October, 2005, a new fraternity made its debut on Washburn University’s campus – Delta Chi. Leadership consultants from Delta Chi came to the university and recruited 15 men to form the Washburn Delta Chi chapter.

The chapter is up to 20 members , but they do not have an official house yet, so they meet in the Lincoln Room for chapter meetings. However, they are currently leasing a house across the street from the university on 17th street. According to John Warren, former president of Delta Chi and active member, this semester is a trial run with the house to see what they are going to do in the future.

“It’s not our official house yet, only a few brothers are living in it together and we are just renting it,” said Warren. “Hopefully it becomes the Delta Chi house.”

Only time will tell if the Delta Chi’s will get an official house.

“Realistically, in five years the Delta Chis could get a house, this would give us time to raise a down payment,” said Warren.

However, getting a house is not the only item on Delta Chi’s agenda.

“Our main goal right now is to get a charter because we are not an official fraternity yet,” said Warren.

According to Warren, to get a charter the Delta Chi members must meet certain requirements. Some of those requirements include: members maintaining good GPAs, participating in community service, displaying financial stability and two members attend leadership conferences and conventions.

“I don’t see a problem in us getting a charter,” said Warren. “We have a lot of great leaders in Delta Chi.”

Warren said what sets Delta Chi apart from other fraternities was the easy access to leadership positions within the fraternity.

“If you show you are a strong leader, you get to jump right in,” said Warren. “You don’t have to go through a lot of red tape.”

Ryan Bishop, associate member of Delta Chi, said he likes being Greek because of the sense of brotherhood.

“There’s a certain camaraderie with brothers of a fraternity that you can’t get from another association,” said Bishop.
