Washburn opens spring season today in Southern Cal Intercollegiate

The Washburn Ichabod golf team has hopes of making it back to the NCAA Division II National Championships.

It all starts today as the Washburn men take part in the Southern Cal Intercollegiate at the Marbella Country Club in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

This two-day tournament has some of the best teams in Division II golf. Last year’s national champion, Barry University, finished second in the tournament when it was held last spring. The Ichabods didn’t fare as well, finishing 11th in a field of 15. Then-junior Ryan Deutsch fared the best for the Washburn golfers, shooting an 11-over 221 that tied him for 25th.

The three-round tournament is played with 36 holes today and 18 Tuesday. Most regular season tournaments are only two rounds.

Dating back to last spring, Washburn has won seven of its last ten tournaments. It has also won seven straight conference tournaments in the MIAA, a feat that’s never been done in WU golf history.
