Lady Blues VB still undefeated after two tourneys

The No. 10 Washburn Lady Blues volleyball team completed four more matches at the Texas Woman’s University Tournament Friday and Saturday, coming up with four 3-0 sweeps versus nonconference regional opponents.

The opening match Friday versus East Central saw Washburn (7-0) win 25-16, 25-17, 25-15, while senior setter Kate Hampson picked up her 39th-career double double with 28 assists and 14 digs.

Hampson shined again in the nightcap with a season-high 38 assists and nine more digs, as the Lady Blues defeated the host Pioneers, 25-17, 25-18, 25-10.

Juniors Ashley Shepard and Molly Smith also excelled for Washburn on Friday with Shepard having 20 kills and Smith having 27 digs.

Early Saturday morning, the Lady Blues got right back to work taking care of Texas A&M-Kingsville winning 25-14, 25-13, 25-23.

Mollie Lacy led the team in kills with 15 while Hampson had 30 more assists and Smith had 12 digs.

In the final match of the tournament, the Lady Blues took out Southwestern Oklahoma State, 25-8, 25-12, 25-22, handling them easily.

The Washburn women have yet to lose a set on the year going 24-0 in their eight matches. The team is the only one in the MIAA that has yet to lose a set, putting them at tied for first with Emporia State.

The Lady Blues next travel to play in the Rockhurst Fall Classic Friday and Saturday Sept. 11 and 12, kicking off the tournament with an 11 a.m. match versus Midwestern State.
