The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team won its second straight game Thursday afternoon in Maryville, Mo., defeating Northwest Missouri State 2-1 in double overtime to improve its record to 2-3-1.

Washburn’s first win of the season came Saturday, Sept. 18, on the road at Missouri Western as the Blues picked up a 1-0 victory. At NWMSU, the Blues jumped on the scoreboard in the 58th minute after a scoreless first half as sophomore forward Leah Talley, with an assist from fellow sophomore forward Leah Stovall, scored her first goal of the season¾ just the third team goal of the season for the Blues¾ to put the Blues up 1-0. In the 75th minute, however, a Jordan Albright score tied it up at 1-1 and would take the game into its first overtime.

Washburn outshot NWMSU 4-1 in the first overtime, but neither team registered a score. In overtime number two, Stovall scored the winning goal off an assist by freshman defender Taylor Mayhew 4:34 seconds into the period.

The Blues, who have never been beaten by the Bearcats in overtime matches, now return home to face Emporia State in the Turnpike Tussle Saturday at 6 p.m. Washburn leads the overall series by a record of 10-3-1 and hasn’t lost to the Hornets since Nov. 7, 2004. Six of the last 10 victories by the Blues were by a score of 2-1.
