It’s the time of the year for students, staff, faculty, alumni and visitors to come together to commemorate the founding of Washburn University.

This year’s rendition of Founders Day, which took place last Friday, featured a variety of events including the “Washburn ROCKS Contest,” “Have Your Cake and Eat It Too” and a plethora of other events. Washburn University students, staff and faculty also enjoyed specials at the WU Bookstore, Union deals at the Corner Store and the grand opening of the WU Wing Bar at the Union Market.

“Founders Day should be celebrated for anything,” said Krystal Luce, junior. “Like a school or a nation to remind us of the history that we don’t know because it benefits us to know how the school came about, the reasoning behind it, how its been supported why it’s still here and why it is an essential part of our community.”

Discussing the history of the school, nursing student Dezso Seteny recalls the former name of Washburn University, Lincoln College, the devastating tornado of 1966 and the donation on behalf of Ichabod Washburn.

After all the days events ended, Seteny said the university needs Founders Day so it doesn’t forget where it came from and wants to go.

“I believe we don’t know where we’re going if we don’t know where we come from,” said Seteny. “We have to follow a way, that’s why we need to know our history. And of course, birthdays are cool.”
