No. 16 Blues stay alive against Lions

The No. 16 Lady Blue held off the Lions Thursday, Feb. 17, for a 70-56 win.

The first half began with a slow start for the Lady Blues⎯they only made nine of their 31 shots taken. Junior guard Stevi Schultz hit three shots from behind the arch with a pair of free throws, and she led the first half scoring 11 points.

The Blues made 80 percent of their free throws as they went into the locker room with the lead of 30-25.

In the second half, the Lady Blues picked up steam by going on a 7-0 opening run, putting themselves up by 14 with 17:24 left to play. The Lions would get the score within three points at the 14:43 mark, but the Lady Blues would pull away again and keep the margin above 10.

Schultz scored one more three pointer and two free throws for a total of 16 points. She shared the game high with junior center Cassie Lombardino, who had 16 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Overall, the Lady Blues got 15 offensive rebounds that they turned into 20 second-chance points. The Blues’ total rebounds for the game were 43, while the Lions where only able to grab 30 rebounds, with six of those being offensive.

The Blues had 16 assists, 15 of which came from the starting five. Sophomore guard Laura Kinderknecht led with 4 assists, she also scored 10 points. Senior forward Alyssa Mullen had 12 points and 6 rebounds.
