VIDEO: Lady Blues win over Gorillas

Hillary Hughes had her 10th double-double and tied her career high in kills as Washburn defeated Pittsburg State 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19) Saturday afternoon in Lee Arena.

The third-ranked Lady Blues won their 21st straight match, their 24th straight in the MIAA and their 38th straight in Lee Arena. They improved to 28-1 and 15-0 in the MIAA and they’ll wrap up the home portion of the regular season Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Fort Hays State. That match will be Senior Day.

Hughes had 19 kills and hit .409 with just one error in 44 tries. She added 16 digs for a double-double. She last had 19 kills last year at Emporia State. Her attack percentage was a season-high for her.

The Gorillas led 9-5 and 12-8 in the fourth set looking to force a fifth. Washburn went on a 12-4 run after that to lead 22-16 and take position to get the win. Pittsburg State pulled within four before two straight PSU errors gave Washburn the match win.

Jessica Kopp had 15 kills in the match and Breanna Lewis and Jessica Fey had nine kills each. Fey had her second double-double with 12 digs and she led Washburn with four blocks.

Five different Lady Blues had double-figure kills. Gracie Petersen had a career-high 18 to lead Washburn. Sami McHenry had 13 and Amanda Guess had 10. Guess led Washburn with 32 assists.

The Lady Blues hit .279 as a team while the Gorillas had a .112 attack percentage. Washburn led in kills, 68-45 and in digs, 99-80. The Gorillas led in blocks, 8-7.

Washburn hit .500 in the first set with just one error in 34 attacks. Kopp and Hughes each had four kills. The Lady Blues dropped to a .217 attack in the second set while the Gorillas hit .263, opening up with an 8-2 lead. Washburn never got within three until a late 3-0 run made the score 21-20, PSU. The Gorillas got to set point at 24-23 and then after two WU points got the win on a Lady Blues service error.

The Lady Blues won easily after a 5-0 gave them an 11-5 lead in the third set. Washburn built the lead to nine at 19-10 and then a 4-0 run gave the Lady Blues the set win. Hughes had the final kill to give Washburn a 2-1 set lead.

Leah Flynn led the Gorillas with 13 kills and Brooke Fay had 11 each. Libero Christa McCaw had 27 digs.
