Calhoun named first team all-region by NCBWA

Big bat Senior third baseman John Calhoun is one of the most touted infielders on the Ichabods.

Washburn senior third baseman John Calhoun was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association all-South Central Region first team announced Tuesday.

Calhoun led the Ichabods with a .398 batting average and he finished the regular season in the top eight of every MIAA hitting category accept triples. While final MIAA stats have not been released, Calhoun finished his season with nine home runs, 74 hits, 47 runs scored and 43 RBI, all team highs. He also led the team and was second in the conference with 23 stolen bases.

Caloun, already a first team all-MIAA selection, will go on to the All-America ballot by the NCBWA. He is Washburn’s first all-region player from any organization since Wes Joy was named second team all-region by the ABCA and Mark Stoltz was named first team by Daktronics, both in 2007. Calhoun is Washburn’s first NCBWA all-region selection.

The Ichabods finished 27-24 and fourth in the MIAA at 22-18. They had their first winning season since 2006.
