Study Abroad in Ireland

The time for the trip of a lifetime is here, two spots left, don’t miss out!

Earn credits! Travel! Do some good for others!  For those who are looking to travel this summer and earn credits while doing so, this is the perfect opportunity. The deadline for applications in March 1, so put a quick on it.

European Cultures and Societies is heading to Northern Ireland July 17, 2014.  Spend ten days learning the culture of the Northern Irish and receive 3 credits in the process.  Washburn Transformational Experience and International Programs scholarships are available, up to $1000 each!

This course is multidimensional consisting of the on-campus portion (scholarly journal articles, watching popular Irish films on the history of Ireland and the politics, and reading cultural texts), and the second and exciting part is the study abroad component.  This is where one gets to experience the everyday life of Northern Ireland, sample fine Irish cuisines in the beautiful cities and majestic countryside.

The group will be working closely with community partners in Belfast, understanding the rich history of the struggles and experience the present day lives of Belfast residents.  Also the class will be submerged in the wonderful murals, memorials, and the “peace wall” that serves as a reminder of the hard fought history that makes Belfast what it is today. The core of the travel is for the class to work through Amizade, the program provider, as well as the local community organizations.

The total estimated cost is around $3100, but scholarships are available, as well as other possible financial aid, and additional fundraisers.  The trip will be July 17-27.  The application deadline is March 1st, for those who have been waiting for this opportunity, and take advantage of the moment, go to https://washburn.studioabroad.com.  For questions or concerns please contact Dr. Karen Kapusta-Pofahl, Lecturer Department of Sociology & Anthropology at [email protected] or call 785-670-1781 to set up an appointment.
